Shout Out to the Cell Phone
Do I think cell phones are incredible? No. Do I think less of the people who carry them around like a fifth limb? Yes. Do I think even less of the people who wait in long lines outside of AT&T stores to get iPhones? Yes. And do I think even less of the imitation iPhones every other network carries? Yes. But, as this weekend pointed out, there’s one thing about having a cell phone that has certainly made my life easier…
God bless the automatic switch to the correct Daylight Savings Time.
Now, I don’t know about you, but when the weekend comes, I pretty much tune out when it comes to things going on around the world. I could tell you who to start in your fantasy football league. I could tell you what movies came out on Friday. I could even tell you the drink specials at random bars throughout the city. But when it comes to current events, or anything that requires a demonstration of IQ, I’m pretty much worthless.
See, I get my reading done during the week. I’ve got CNN, the NY Times and EW on bookmark, and I know all of you do as well. (hence our readership dipping dramatically every weekend). They’re checked about 36 times a day, each, and generally, I feel like I’m about as current as the President when it comes to the goings-on of the world. So if the powers at be were to reassign the DST day to a Tuesday or something, I’d be golden.
But no. They have chosen Sunday, and only by the graces of satellite technology have I been saved the embarrassment of telling people that I didn’t have a clue today was the day our clocks were to be set back. I mean, it takes me a good five minutes to walk myself through the whole ‘fall back, spring forward’ routine in the first place, and by the end of it, I’ve realized that I’m no further off than when I started.
So when I woke up yesterday and looked at my phone and saw the little warning that my time had been adjusted, I smiled, I laid back down, and I thought about how great cell phones are – in this one, very limited instance.
Oh, and text messaging. Text messaging is an incredible relationship saver. For those of you in which this applies, you know what I’m talking about…
So yeah, that’s it. I’m comforted on this Monday morning by the simple fact that I’ll never have to worry about Daylight Savings Time again. My phone’s got me covered. Now if I could just learn to trust my cell phone’s wake-up alarm, I’d be set for life. But we’ll save that for another time.
Do you agree, dear readers? Did you go through a similar experience yesterday? Or was it the cable that gave you a clue? Drop us a line and let us know your routine.
