I Still Hate Vegetables
Isn’t this something you’re supposed to grow out of? Hating broccoli and green beans and all the other things located in the vegetable region of the food pyramid? I mean, I’m about a 1/3 the way through my life expectancy and I still gag when eating spinach (that’s not accurate, I still refuse to try spinach – but replace with it with something else equally disgusting and slime-like). I thought at some point I was supposed to just start liking stuff.
Now, I’ll be honest, I have probably the least refined palate of anyone I know. I generally like tacos, spaghetti, BBQ or hamburgers. Once you venture outside those four – things can get dangerous. It’s a curse. I wish I could help it, I really do. I watch all sorts of cooking shows and they cook all this good-looking food that I know I’d never eat/like.
I feel like something must have happened in my development for me to have such an aversion to veggies. I see my peers crushing corn and green beans and asparagus and broccoli and I know how much good it’s doing their body. But I can’t do it.
Scientifically speaking, I read that as you get older your taste buds are supposed to get less receptive. Apparently, the old ‘buds are supposed to take a more laissez faire attitude towards the food you eat. And, to some extent, mine have. I like mashed potatoes now. That’s a start. Isn’t it?
But if you give me a high-falootin’ plate full of incredibly cooked vegetables and a steak – I’ll just eat the steak. Nothing like being at a fancy restaurant and eating like an eight-year-old.
“Hmmm. This says it comes with vegetables, it possible I can substitute fries for those vegetables? And yes, I’ll probably need a bib, I can get a little messy.”
I’ve thought about becoming a smoker because I hear that dulls the taste buds. I figure I can huff through a pack a day and then cruise in to annihilate some green beans. I would think the health benefits versus the health problems might equal out – but I may be giving veggies too much credit.
I also thought about getting a sinus infection. I remember that whenever I had a cold I couldn’t taste anything – so that might be a more healthful approach to consider.
But, outside smoking and sinus infections, I don’t know what I can do. Am I alone on this? Am I the only grown adult who still really hates vegetables? Am I the only person who will just refuse to eat stuff? Why couldn’t they taste better and not so much like mud?

You know who else hates vegetables? Berman. You just need a magic bullet.

You could always drench everything in melted cheese and add bacon bits. I’ve even used it for cereal. It’s AMAZING! Ranch dressing and bacon bits works as well. Now that I think about it, anything with baconbits will work….
