Friday Quick Hitters

It’s been a while since we’ve done these, but it’s Friday, and there’s been a lot going on in the world that we think warrants further discussion. So, Friday Quick Hitters it is…
KU fired Mark Mangino, their head football coach. Unless you’re an idiot, you knew this was gonna happen. It had to for KU to continue recruiting three-star talent, which apparently, is incredibly vital. Both sides have weighed in, some standing up for the coach and the general brutality that’s expected in football. Others have said he’s gone over the line and deserved it. Well, let me tell you, as a KU supporter, the number one reason Mangino getting canned is a good thing: Because the prospect of getting a new coach to run the program is infinitely more exciting than the prospect of Mangino returning, scandal or not. Period.
Our favorite show, along with Top Chef, had a group on called The League of Extraordinary Dancers on the stage Thursday night. Now, I love the show and everything it’s about, but could this have been any more embarrassing for the current contestants? I mean, this group was incredible. And everything they did undermined what the contestants were hoping to accomplish. Which I’m fine with – I just found it funny is all. Here’s what we mean:
With the holidays now officially in full swing thanks to the ever so American commercial kickoff, Black Friday, I know you’ll all be hitting up the malls in search of gifts for people that you feel like you need to get a present for, even though you and I both know it’s more of a hassle than anything else. So while you’re there, I want you to check out those video booths that the movies have made so famous. You know, the ones where you get your picture taken with your sweetie on some roll of film with your tongue out or in the midst of a mid-cheek kiss. (i.e. the opening credits of the movie The Breakup) Because, as my girlfriend pointed out, have you ever actually seen a couple doing this? Is anyone actually paying for this crap? One of life’s great mysteries if you ask me.
Speaking of the holidays, we Surly Birds will be watching Christmas Vacation and Home Alone from now til Santa comes. But we also know there are other holiday favorites out there. And we can all count on TBS to ring in the sleigh bells with a 24-hour marathon that will ruin A Christmas Story for us all, a movie I actually liked once. Now the mere thought of it makes me wanna shoot my eye out. HAHAHA!!!! So what movies will you all be watching this Christmas? What movie is part of your Christmas tradition?
Oh, and I think Tiger Woods may have cheated on his wife. We at the Surly Birds aren’t sure yet, we’re waiting for the press to pick up the story first. When that happens, we’ll be able to form a more cogent opinion on the matter. But one thing, if I may: Tiger, why are you even married in the first place? Been wondering that for a while now…
In movie news, go see The Road. It’s the best movie out right now. And if you’re so inclined, read the book. Its prose will knock you out.
Also read recently that Jonathan Franzen’s new novel, which promises to be a sprawling, dysfunctional follow-up to the equally sprawling, dysfunctional NBA winner, The Corrections, will be out Fall 2010. Cant. Wait. For. That. If you haven’t read The Corrections, do.
Well, that’s enough for us this Friday. Drop us a line about literally anything and let’s get some discussion going.
