It’s OK to Like the Yankees

Yankees

Contrary to popular belief, it is indeed okay to like the Yankees. In fact, it’s more than ok. It’s encouraged. Because the New York Yankees are good for sports in America. Yeah, you heard me.

Last time I checked, we weren’t living in a Communist dictatorship where average is inspiring and it’s impossible to rise to the top. The New York Yankees make every single team work harder in the offseason than it did the year before. They spend more money than any other team, sometimes doubling and even tripling the payrolls of some small market squads. But here’s the thing: the small markets can spend, too. For some reason, no one likes to mention that.

Why does everyone jump up and down with anger at the so-called outrageous spending of George, and now Hal, Steinbrenner? I know that if I lived in New York, I’d want my owner spending all the money he had on my beloved nine, too. It’s called passion. It’s called an owner that loves his organization. And your outrage? Well that’s called jealousy.

But please, just stop. Jealousy doesn’t look good on you. Besides, it’s not your fault that the man at the top of your organization won’t belly up to the table with the Steinbrenners. I’m just as jealous as you are. My team is the Royals, owned by an heir to the Wal-Mart fortune. You may have heard of them – they’re a little shop that sells everyday goods at unbeatably low prices. But I don’t go around hating the Yankees just because my guy won’t open his billfold.

You all plead for a salary cap – for someone to make things fair again. But then when Tampa Bay makes the world series, ratings reach an all time low. When it’s the Rams vs. the Titans in the Super Bowl, people only tune in for the halftime show. And when it’s San Antonio vs. well, anyone, people are on their summer vacations. Face it, people need dynasties. America craves winners. You need the Yankees the same way you need the Cowboys and the Lakers.

And if they’ve taught us anything, it’s that you have to spend money to make money. You may be a small market now, but in time, that can change. It’s capitalism at it’s finest – the backbone of this country. And it’s the New York Yankees who embody this spirit better than anybody. There’s a reason the Yankees are a legacy. Don’t hate them for it.

Oh, and just for all you haters out there who refuse to be convinced, how’d you enjoy the postseason last year without the Yankees? Felt kind of weird, didn’t it? Some would say it was a little less American without Ronan Tinon singing during the 7th inning stretch.

Sure, it’s okay to be a Yankees fan. What’s not okay is wearing a Yankees jersey to a Royals-White Sox game, or a Cubs-Cardinals game.

I’ve been a small market fan since the day I started to root for the Kansas City Royals. From our standpoint, it does seem unfair to pay one player more than an entire baseball team. It seems misproportionate and excessive. But the Yankess do win games, and they pay for it. I couldn’t agree with the poster more. The Yankees are an integral part of American sporting and the sport of baseball. You can’t hate on them for what they spend because they produce results, and that’s pretty much the bottom line in sports these days. That’s it. I’m out. (Good website by the way guys)

    Over-rated.

    Over-paid.

    Over-covered in the “media”.

AND I hate to get all 1984, but everyone with any stake in MLB has a vested interest in the Yankees doing. When they’re playing half as good as they are portrayed, their audience is huge, and that’s just from NYC. They can carry the post season ratings goal from the Big Apple alone. So… hmmmm… Its weird that they win, well… won, so much.

Plus the whole team is juiced.

    Go National League! Go Cards!

Not if you have ever lived in Boston!

I have a lot of hate in my heart and I need an appropriate, productive, and acceptable outlet to express my talents. I used to focus my hate on orphans with leukemia, but that was a tough ice breaker and I could never get laid after I let that slip out on a date …… except for one chick who seemed a little TOO into it. While some have suggested joining the Aryan Nation as an outlet, I find them to be unsophisticated and repetitive; totally lame. To boot, they’re pretty cliche, outdated, and apparently the FBI puts you on some list if you join. I needed something fresh and dynamic to hate that also wouldn’t cock-block me on a date or result in the FBI digging through my trash and water-boarding me for information. That’s when I discovered hating the Yankees. It’s a haters’ dream. I can hate all I want and not only is it tolerated, it’s encouraged! There are websites, t-shirts, people from Boston, etc. Furthermore, I can confidently credit at least one hand-job and possibly a BJ to drunken hate-the -Yankees tirades in various bars. While there will always be a place in my blackened hate-filled heart for the orphans with leukemia, and I still find the time to write an anonymous letter to the Ronald McDonald House every now and then, I have found my true passion and my masterpiece in hating the Yankees.

So, to summarize Master Hater’s eloquent prose with a simple, striking phrase – he simply hates the Yankees because everyone else does. He doesn’t know why he hates them, he just knows that it’s the cool thing to do. So cool in fact that simply stating such an opinion in a bar satisfies a night’s worth of sexual fantasies. Were this actually true, I have a feeling a lot more people would be hating the Yankees pretty soon. But until that fateful day, my point still stands. Jealousy is king, and no team inspires more jealousy than the Yankees. Quit trying to take the cool stance, and write a letter to your owner asking him to be a little more like Father and Son Steinbrenner.

I too like your website. Go Yankees! If you root for the Royals, you really don’t know what baseball can be – exciting. Nuff said!
